Our policy brief looks at the changes made by the Rajasthan government through Wind & Hybrid Energy Policy, 2019, and Renewable Energy Policy 2023

In Kundol village, Gujarat, land rich in critical minerals like nickel and chromium, essential for electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies was auctioned for private mining without consulting tribal communities. Locals face the threat of displacement despite having pending forest rights claims under the FRA. Experts point out that a just energy transition must prioritize consent, equity, and sustainability.

In Kerala’s Attappady block, renewable energy company Suzlon set up windmills on land historically owned by tribal communities which is now ordered to be returned. Attappady, home to 6% of Kerala’s tribal population, is witnessing increasing land conflicts, as tribals like National Award-winner Nanjiyamma face legal battles against non-tribal settlers claiming ownership through disputed or illegal sale deeds. Despite laws restricting the transfer of tribal land, energy and commercial projects continue to operate on contested terrain.
