Summary

In December 2025, residents of Balgavade village in Maharashtra's Sangli district protested a proposed solar power project as the move required felling of over 5,000 trees, which they planted 20 years ago with village funds.

Nine hectares of 'gairan' land (common land) in Balgavade village was selected for the development of decentralised solar power plant under the Mukhyamantri Suar Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0. The project is expected to generate 5 MW energy for surrounding agricultural areas. However, the villagers opposed vehemently given that nearly 10,000 trees required to be fell for the project, citing environmental issues.

While the officials claimed that the said land only has 555 trees, the villagers pointed out that the land has more than 10,000 trees. The villagers also pointed out that Sangli is a climatically vulnerable district prone to drought and felling of such large number of trees will impact the local environment negatively.

Despite villagers' opposition, the officials continued with the project. The villagers convened a special Gram Sabha and passed resolution to stop the use of the said land and proposed an alternate land. However, the officials allegedly did not consider the Gram Sabha resolution and rejected their suggestion for an alternate land, which was a forest reserved plot.

The villagers then undertook a hunger strike which was lifted with assurance from elected representatives regarding removal of projects. However, the officials came back to remove the trees. The villagers then blocked the highway to stop the felling of trees. The villagers used their cattle to block the road and appealed to environmentalists to oppose the project. However, the officials came back a few days later with heavy police force and cut down 70 percent of the trees.

Ravindra Shinde, a resident of the village and convenor of the forum opposing tree cutting, told The Times of India, "First, the permission was given to cut the trees, stating there are 555 trees. We objected and told the authorities that there are more than 10,000 trees that will eventually be cut. Later, the Forest Department carried out a survey and allowed the cutting of 5,759 trees. At the spot, we have estimated that 70 percent of the trees have been cut."

The villagers planned to approach NGT but decided to not go as the officials had already cut down almost all the trees. They have now been promised replantation in a nearby plot but the residents are disappointed with the felling of their forest.
