We have built the country's first and only database of ongoing land and resource conflicts. Our research aims to facilitate decision-making that helps in resolving and minimising such conflicts.

India’s ambitious agenda for industrial and infrastructure growth requires large swathes of land and its resources. At the same time, a huge part of its population uses these resources to earn livelihood. The competing demands cause conflicts. This bodes ill for both businesses and communities. The impacts are visible in the unprecedented quantum of investments getting locked in disputes.
Combined with emerging concerns such as climate change, resources disputes increase vulnerabilities of both, businesses as well as those living on economic and social margins. Decision making on natural-resources transactions in the past has been limited by the paucity of data and analysis on the full range of factors and dynamics that cause such disputes.
Our research intends to bridge this gap. We generate data and insights to address systemic issues underlying natural-resources transactions to minimise risks of businesses and socioeconomic vulnerabilities of communities.

Download MethodologyOver 35 researchers use multiple sources to track natural-resources disputes, depending on where they are based and which source is accessible.
Data about each dispute is collected on various points. The numbers are taken from government records, independent research studies, or directly from affected parties.
An important part of this exercise is to verify the existence of each dispute and associated facts using more than one source. Although most cases of disputes are identified from media reports, they are verified by collecting additional documents.
The data collected are periodically analysed to look for emerging patterns and thematic issues to draw insights for responsible and secure natural-resources transactions .
