Summary

In January 2025, hundreds of villagers from eleven recently added villages of the Vapi Municipal Corporation (VMC) held a protest in Chandor village, opposing the merger with the city. The protestors raised concerns over the lack of consultation with the villagers, the sudden closure of gram panchayat offices and the issue of an increase in taxes.

The villagers, primarily from tribal communities, are alarmed by the imposition of new taxes on services previously untaxed and the potential loss of their land for development projects. "Over 80 percent of the population in these villages are tribal people with irregular incomes, and they cannot afford the increased taxes," said Jagan Patel, a local social worker. They also fear that their small plots of land may be seized for city expansion.

A significant grievance was the exclusion of certain areas from the municipal limits, particularly the adjacent notified area, while far-off villages like Morai, 12 kilometers away, were included. "Morai’s residents, mostly tribal, were never consulted," said MLA Anant Patel.

The protest intensified when the villagers marched to the Deputy Collector's office in Pardi to submit a memorandum but were blocked by police. The officers refused to come out to accept our memorandum, citing the model code of conduct for municipality elections.

Refusing to back down, the protestors sat on a dharna and later pasted their memorandum on the office wall. Women in the crowd threw bangles at the building in a symbolic act of defiance.

The protesters continue to demand the removal of their villages from VMC's jurisdiction, as they believe the process has been rushed and detrimental to their communities. However, it remains uncertain whether the government will address the villagers’ concerns or whether further protests will escalate.
