Summary

Nearly 100 families were displaced as the Nagaon district administration in Assam carried out an anti-encroachment drive in Bhakatgaon, Samaguri, on 5 December 2025.

District Commissioner Devashish Sharma said the action targeted a government plot measuring 38 bighas (around 13 acres) in Bhakatgaon, Samaguri, which had been illegally occupied since the 1990s. He added that the eviction notices were issued to residents around 15 days back, following which around 90 percent of families vacated the place. The remaining occupants left after the area was cleared of encroachment.

The affected families, however, said that they had lived on the land for generations, and the loss of their homes has created deep uncertainty about both shelter and livelihood.

The District Commissioner indicated that the eviction drive is not a one-time measure and that further drives are likely in the coming days. He said, "This is just the beginning, and we will clear all encroached land in Nagaon district during the coming days. After today’s eviction at Bhakatgaon, the next phase will be in Salanibari, Ahom Gaon, Tuktuki, Roumari Beach, Mairadhwaj, Bechamari, Shalmabari and Akharbari Gelekni Beach."

Speaking on 3 November 2025, the chief minister had reaffirmed his government’s commitment to continuing eviction drives and stated that “illegal Miyas” would not have peace during his tenure. The word Miya has long been used as a pejorative for Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam and is commonly associated with accusations of foreign origin, though sections of the community have since appropriated the term as a form of protest.
