Summary

On 28 April 2025, over 1,000 members of the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) protested in Belonia, South Tripura, against the alleged illegal construction of a high-rise embankment near the Muhuri River by Bangladesh along the Indo-Bangladesh border. The protesters claim that this violates the 150-yard buffer zone mandated by international norms.

Carrying Indian flags and banners, the protesters accused the Bangladeshi government of violating Indian sovereignty. They expressed outrage at the remarks made by Bangladeshi Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus, who referred to Northeast India as "landlocked" during a trip to China.

To prevent further escalation, the Border Security Force and Tripura Police stopped the protesters from reaching the embankment site to prevent any conflict.

YTF President Suraj Debbarma said, “We will not tolerate encroachment on our ancestral lands. If this illegal structure is not dismantled, we are prepared to reclaim the Chittagong Hill Tracts and Cox’s Bazar to establish a Greater Tipraland.” He further warned that should Bangladesh seize “even an inch” of Indian land, the demand for a separate homeland—Greater Tipraland—would intensify.

Local residents are concerned that the new embankment could lead to severe flooding during the monsoon season, recalling the devastating floods of the previous year. Meanwhile, State PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte visited the area and assured locals that the situation is being closely monitored and given top priority. He said the government has plans to construct a dam on the river bank as a countermeasure to protect the low-lying areas of Belonia.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said his government has taken necessary measures in response to the construction and stated that he has communicated the matter to the central government. However, the Government of India has yet to issue an official response.
