Summary

In September 2025, the National Security Guard (NSG) served eviction notices to the residents of Mehram Nagar, a village adjoining Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. The notice, affecting over 10,000 residents and 5000 households, asked the residents to vacate their houses by 30 September 2025. A majority of the residents belong to Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class communities.

“Unauthorised occupants to vacate the land by removing any encroachments, unauthorised constructions, or occupations,” the notice read. An NSG official told The Indian Express, "This land was given to us by the Defence Ministry and we have the legal documents".

However, the residents allege that their ancestors and prior generations lived in the area for over 300 years.

In 1962, the Delhi Cantonment Board (DCB) allotted 60 houses to families when they were shifted from the western Mehram Nagar during the expansion of the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Over time, this settlement has grown to accommodate thousands of houses.

According to NSG officials, eviction notices were not issued to the 60 houses, unless "additional rooms" were constructed illegally. Residents, however, question why no one flagged the expansion as an issue over the past four decades. "At that time nobody flagged it as an issue. Now, after four decades of living here, we are being asked to move out," Anil Kumar, a resident whose family had been among those allotted flats, told The Economic Times.

Residents moved the Delhi High Court, which stayed NSG's eviction order until 16 December 2025.

On 28 September 2025, Mehram Nagar residents held a mahapanchayat to protest the NSG’s action and 36 communities from 360 villages attended the gathering in solidarity. At the mahapanchayat, a representative of the National President of Rashtriya Jhadhu Manch and National General Secretary of the Indian Dalit Forum, Lakhan Singh, claimed that generations of families have been living in the village for 300 years. "They possess all the necessary land records. The government is testing the patience of marginalised communities. The NSG has already taken parts of their land and water resources," he said.

Residents are now collecting documents and drafting replies to the eviction notices for submitting it to the NSG office, according to a report by The Print.
