Summary

After a yearlong resistance by the residents of Kasba Peth, a residential area in the heart of Pune city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) was compelled to change the location of the Kasba Peth metro station from the area. The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) has now decided to construct the station on the land allocated to Dadoji Konddev Primary School. The property, which was owned by the PMC, has been handed over to MahaMetro. Work will begin in a year.

MahaMetro needed one acre of land to construct the metro station. In December 2018, residents of Kasba Peth had staged a protest against the proposed underground metro station. Carrying banners opposing the metro, the protesters, which included women and children, sought the relocation of the station instead of themselves relocating. They said the metro was an unnecessary addition to the residential locality and feared that four centuriesold temples in the area may also be demolished for the metro construction.

The MahaMetro officials claimed to have a rehabilitation plan chalked out, under which the affected residents would have been rehabilitated within one kilometre of their existing homes.

The residents staged another protest in March 2019, emphasising that a metro station was not needed in a residential area like Kasba Peth. They said that families have been living in the area for many generations and have an emotional attachment to their homes.

The PMC had approved a proposal to build a metro rail system in the city in 2010. According to the website of the Pune Metro, in the last few decades, the city has witnessed a rise in population as well as migration of people from other cities for job opportunities. However, the city lacked sustainable infrastructure to facilitate easy commute. The average travel time for citizens in Pune using public transport is more than 100 minutes a day. This prompts many people to use private vehicles, which results in traffic congestion. MahaMetro decided to build the Pune Metro to address this issue.
