Summary

The demolition drive carried out by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) near Vanar Vat Lake in the Vatva area on 20 January 2026 sparked anger and resentment among local residents, many of whom claim to have lived in the area for several years. Several mud-brick houses were demolished using bulldozers, rendering over 400 families homeless.

During the action, some locals alleged that demolition action was being taken without giving notice. Some women who were arguing were also taken out by the police after explaining.

Locals questioned the priorities of the administration and alleged selective action against the urban poor. “When the area floods during the monsoon or roads develop deep potholes, no official comes to help us. But today, the entire administration and police force arrived to demolish the houses of the poor,”  a resident told Sandesh, echoing concerns raised by several others.

The demolition near Vanar Vat lake is part of a broader anti-encroachment drive being undertaken by the civic body, following similar actions at Chandola and Isanpur lakes in Ahmedabad. According to the AMC, 420 residential and 30 commercial encroachments were removed from the Vanar Vat lake area. All structures were demolished within a few hours, except for three religious structures—one mosque and two temples.

The operation was conducted in four phases by eight teams, beginning early in the morning. More than 500 police personnel from Zone 6 police stations were deployed, along with around 300 municipal officers and staff. The demolition involved 10 Hitachi machines, five JCB machines, and manual labour, as reported by the ETV. During the drive, tensions briefly escalated in Bharwad Vas, where some residents initially refused to vacate their homes, prompting the administration to temporarily halt the demolition. Police later intervened to clear the area.

The anti-encroachment drive has opened up 34,885 square metres of lake and reserved plot land and 770 metres of town planning (TP) road. This includes 28,227 square metres of lake area and 6,658 square metres of a reserved garden plot under the TP scheme, according to Bhaskar. Encroachments were also removed from 18-metre and 24-metre-wide TP roads around the lake, which had narrowed significantly due to illegal constructions.

The civic body said that 75 displaced families have been shifted to shelter homes in Lambha and Narol using AMTS buses. Families residing in the area prior to 2010 would be considered for housing under government rehabilitation schemes. Officials added that following debris removal, lake development work will commence, and the proposed interlinking of Vanar Vat, Mahalaxmi, and Ropda lakes is expected to help address waterlogging in low-lying areas and ease traffic congestion after the TP roads are opened.
