Summary

On 13 February 2026, hundreds of residents of Kokodi village in Kondagaon district stormed the premises of the Maa Danteshwari Maize Processing and Marketing Cooperative Society's ethanol plant, vandalising office infrastructure and vehicles including cars and tractors.

Police estimated that around 700–800 people entered the property and damaged office infrastructure and vehicles, resulting in losses estimated between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh. Security personnel were deployed immediately and reinforcements were called in from Kanker to contain the situation. The following morning, groups attempted to re-enter the premises and pelted police with stones using slingshots.

The attack came after what villagers described as over a year of unaddressed complaints about liquid effluent discharge from the plant into adjoining agricultural fields and damages to crops. Farmers alleged that the plant management, including Managing Director Vinod Khanna, visited the facility only once or twice a month from Raipur, and that this irregular oversight meant pollution complaints were never acted upon in time.

The Maa Danteshwari plant, located on 14 acres of government land in Kokodi, is Chhattisgarh's first maize-based ethanol facility. Built at a cost of Rs 140 crore with state government's backing, it was designed to process 200 metric tonnes of maize per day and produce 80,000 litres of ethanol daily, conceived as a flagship initiative for crop diversification in a district that records the state's highest maize output. The plant received environmental clearance with a mandatory Zero Liquid Discharge condition — meaning any discharge of effluent into surrounding fields would constitute a direct violation of its clearance terms.

When farmers from Kondagaon had first raised pollution and crop damage concerns in early August 2025, Agriculture Minister Ramvichar Netam visited the village and acknowledged the complaints but urged patience, saying the plant had not yet fully started and that a compensation plan would be developed if losses were verified. No concrete action followed in the months after.

The district administration has announced an inquiry into both the vandalism and the pollution allegations, but as of the date of the incident, no findings had been made public.

The Kondagaon attack is not an isolated incident — across Chhattisgarh, where the state government has approved 42 ethanol plants with nine already operational, communities living adjacent to distilleries have raised similar complaints of effluent discharge and crop loss, and have in several cases faced police action for peaceful protest.
