Summary

Farmers from 26 villages under the Byramangala and Kanchugaranahalli gram panchayats near Bidadi in Ramanagara taluk have been on an indefinite protest against the Karnataka government’s move to push ahead with the Greater Bengaluru Integrated Township (GBIT) project.

Touted as India’s first AI city, the proposed township aims to create a “second central business district” across 9,000 acres located roughly 30 km from Bengaluru. Of this, over 2,000 acres have been set aside for AI-based industries and allied sectors.

The project was first proposed in 2006 but fierce resistance from local farmers halted the plan. It gained momentum in 2023 after the Greater Bengaluru Bidadi Smart City Planning Authority was upgraded to the Greater Bengaluru Development Authority (GBDA). In March 2025, the state government issued another preliminary notification without consulting with farmers, triggering a fresh agitation.

In September, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said that as many as 70 percent of landowners were in favour of the acquisition. Farmers, however, rejected this claim and said that not a single farmer was consulted before the issuance of the notification.

Farmers have been protesting against the project, fearing the loss of fertile land and inadequate compensation. Opposition leader R Ashoka said that at least 6,500 acres out of the 9,600 acres of land identified for acquisition are fertile agricultural land. He added that there are more than 10 lakh coconut and mango trees, and 6.5 lakh litres of milk from these villages reaches the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) daily. As many as 3,500 families are dependent on the land for their livelihood.

"We will not give an inch of our farmland," said a farmer from Bidadi. "This is the only source of our livelihood. If the government takes it away, we’ll have nothing left." Farmers also see the project as part of a larger push to expand industrialisation as several manufacturing companies, including Coca-Cola, Toyota, and Bosch, have already set up factories in the Bidadi industrial area.

They are also demanding a higher compensation for land. The state has promised a 50:50 compensatory model, under which farmers who give up their land are promised developed plots. The state has offered between Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 3 crore per acre for the land and annual annuities ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 per acre to provide livelihood support from the date of the final notification until monetary compensation is paid or developed sites are handed over. Landless families will be given Rs 25,000 per year. However, farmers are demanding Rs 5–6 crore per acre as the land prices around Bidadi industrial area have skyrocket over the last decade amid industrialisation.
