Summary

On 24 November 2025, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and city police removed more than 900 structures from the Isanpur Lake area in the South Zone. The action came just days after the large-scale clearance at Chandola Lake, marking a renewed push to clear long-standing encroachments from lake beds across the city.

According to AMC authorities, an estimated 90,000 square meters of the lake’s total area of 95,640 square meters had been occupied. The structures included 925 residential units and 167 commercial units, the latter of which had been removed earlier.

The demolition began at 7 am and continued till 6 pm, using a massive fleet of machines, including 12 Hitachis, eight JCBs, 12 dumpers and 12 pusher machines. About 700 AMC personnel from the estate, engineering, health, fire and Urban Community Development (UCD) departments and 550 police personnel were deployed. Twenty joint teams were formed for the operation.

To manage the process, AMC divided the lake area into four zones. Fire and medical teams were on standby. Before the demolition, electricity connections were removed and residents were told to take their belongings. The UCD department arranged AMTS buses to shift around** **44 families to a nearby shelter home.

Sunil Nadia, a resident, told BBC Gujarati, "Our ancestors lived in this settlement for about 50 years. We have been living here since Isanpur was not included in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, and today our houses have been demolished."

Another resident, Delaji Thakor**,** demanded alternative houses for those displaced. Meanwhile, many families said they were struggling to find houses for rent, as both rent and deposits had increased.

AMC said the estate department had issued three notices over two months, including personal notices asking residents to voluntarily vacate. Public notices were also issued through newspapers, hoardings and autorickshaw announcements. A final notice was issued on** **20 November, and after demands from residents, an additional four days were given. However, residents said that they were not given any information about when the rehabilitation process would begin.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Riddesh Rawal said that notices were issued before the monsoon but the demolition was delayed due to Diwali. He said, "The operation was carried out in four parts. A total of 925 residential houses and 167 illegal commercial structures were demolished. Sufficient time was given to vacate the place and after giving notices three times this action has been taken. Those affected will be allotted houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana."

One of the residents, Payaleban, filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the demolition notice. He said that the demolition went ahead despite the matter being listed for hearing in the first week of December. “I filed a petition in the Supreme Court, the deadline was given in the first week of December. Even before that, such a large-scale demolition was done," the resident told ETV.

AMC officials said that lake development work has already been included in this year’s budget. Debris will be cleared and the storm water line will be connected so that the lake fills during the monsoon, which they said will reduce water-logging. The corporation added that similar drives to remove encroachments and restore lakes will continue across Ahmedabad.
