Summary

Residents of Ugedi village of Nakhtrana taluka opposed the administration's move to grant permission for black trap mining on the village’s grazing land, citing livelihood concerns of livestock-rearing families. In November 2025, locals launched a sit-in protest at the site, saying the decision violates the collective opposition expressed during the public hearing held a few months ago.

According to Ugedi Sarpanch Karanbhai Rabari, the disputed patch of land, survey number 303 covers around 280 acres and has been used as grazing land since it was registered in 1966. He noted that while the village then had 700 cattle, the number has now risen to over 2,500. “As per norms, Ugedi needs nearly 1,000 acres of "gauchar" land, but the administration has never allocated it. Instead, they have now handed over our existing grazing land to a private company,” he told the Bhaskar. Dubbing the move "unilateral" and "against the interests of the village", he pointed out that the mining site is located barely 500 metres from residential areas and poses threats to public safety.

Residents warn that the mining project could damage key public utilities, including the local lake, forested patches, agricultural fields, and the Banni water supply scheme. The ongoing protest has brought together cattle-owners, farmers, and community leaders, who have been gathering daily under the banner of "Save the Grazing Land."

On the other hand, the director of the company that received the mining lease, dismissed the allegations. He said the government issued the lease through proper procedures and that, as per official records, the land has not been classified as "gauchar" since 1985.

The protest has seen cattle-owners arrive with their animals in a show of symbolic resistance. Slogans demanding protection of grazing land echoed through the site, accompanied by Ramdhun recitations. Officials, including the Mamlatdar, reached the spot to review the situation, while support poured in from neighbouring panchayats.

Sarpanch Karanbhai Rabari said the movement will intensify if the lease approval is not withdrawn. He announced that Maldhari organisations across the region are preparing for larger demonstrations, including highway blockades and coordinated protests by surrounding villages. “If the grazing land goes, the cattle-owners cannot survive,” he said, as the land conflict continues to widen the divide between villagers and the administration.
