On 25 September 2024, an eviction drive in Kerkhabari village of Bongaigaon district in Assam was temporarily halted following strong protests from residents. The eviction intended to clear 185 bighas of government land reportedly earmarked for the construction of an agricultural research centre by the Assam Agriculture Department.
According to the Kerkhabari residents, no prior notice was given before the officials attempted the eviction. Tension escalated when the government officials arrived, leading to heated exchanges between the residents and officials. The villagers, particularly women, also dismantled fencing that had been erected to demarcate the boundaries of the proposed research centre.
The police forces deployed on the scene prevented the situation from further escalation. The administration likewise decided to suspend the eviction operation temporarily.
Local villagers, many of whom have cultivated the land for generations, expressed their frustration and anxiety over the government’s decision. “We’ve lived and farmed here for decades. Why now? If the government denies us this land, how will we survive?” one villager told the media.
