Several landowners have expressed dissatisfaction over the compensation awarded for land acquired to build the two-lane Shillong Western Bypass in Meghalaya.
Landowners claim that in a public hearing held two years ago, the government pledged to pay roughly Rs 1,200 crore. In February 2024, the landowners received only Rs 681.62 crore, which is significantly lower than promised.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) will construct the bypass. The road, spanning approximately 38.256 kilometers and estimated to cost Rs 650 crore, aims to connect Lad Umsaw in Ri Bhoi district with Lad Mawreng in East Khasi Hills district.
On 8 December 2023, Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Prestone Tynsong, informed that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways was about to cancel the road project as the compensation for land acquisition was double than the cost of the project.
In February 2024, Tynsong informed that the landowners agreed to accept the lower compensation initially determined by the Deputy Commissioners. This revised rate amounted to approximately Rs 650 crore, aligning with the project's budget. However, recent reports indicate that not all landowners are content with the final compensation.
One landowner, Rogen Khyllait, stated, “The land which we part ways for the implementations of the Shillong Western Bypass is very fertile and very suitable for agriculture but now we are getting compensation only half of what was agreed upon. This is a huge loss for us.”
On 1 May 2024, Tynsong announced that land for the Shillong Western Bypass has been partially handed over to NHIDCL, with the entire stretch of land expected to be handed over soon.
