On 8 August 2025, the Assam Forest Department demolished 146 illegal houses and evicted 205 people from the Doyang Reserve Forest in Golaghat district to reclaim over 300 bighas (40 hectares) of reserved forest land.
A district administration official told the Times of India that notices were served to the families on 24 July 2025, asking them to vacate the land within seven days. Following which, two writ petitions were filed by a few people of Negheri Bil claiming land rights and praying to treat the notices as 'ignored'. A single-judge bench of the court on 29 July extended the eviction window until 7 August 2025 and instructed the state government to initiate steps for eviction and conservation of the forest land after the deadline.
The petitioners again approached the two-member division bench of Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar and Justice Arun Dev Choudhury by filing a writ appeal, in which the court on 5 August granted the petitioners a 10-day window, until 14 August, to either submit proof of land allocation or vacate. Till then, the government was directed not to take any coercive steps against the appellants. Adhering to the orders, the Forest Department and the district administration left houses of 59 appellants untouched and demolished the others.
In court, authorities framed the action as forest conservation and enforcement of law, while local administration and Forest Department affidavits to the Gauhati High Court stated that large tracts of encroachment have been cleared historically.
On 18 August 2026, the Gauhati High Court directed families residing inside the Doyang and Nambor reserve forests in Golaghat district to vacate the land within seven days, ruling that no encroacher can claim legal rights over reserved forest land. The ruling dealt a blow to hopes of 74 petitioners who challenged eviction notices, citing the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation of 1886, the Assam Land Policy of 2019, and a Supreme Court directive from December 2024. The bench, however, dismissed the arguments, noting that the petitioners had failed to provide valid documents to establish their land rights despite being given ten days earlier this month to do so.
In October 2025, residents of Doyang resolved to escalate their century-old struggle for land rights amid growing frustration over unmet demands. Residents have been demanding legal land ownership stating that the community has been in continuous settlement in Doyang for over 120 years. They allege that successive governments have repeatedly failed to deliver on promises to grant pattas (land ownership deeds), leaving residents with no option but to intensify their agitation.
While communities argued that evictions violate ancestral rights, the Assam government defended its move, adding that such action against encroachers would continue.
