On 20 August 2025, a large-scale eviction drive at Adarsha Bazar in Hojai turned violent when residents resisted attempts by authorities to clear government land. The operation, conducted by the Hojai Municipal Board (HMB) and the district administration, aimed to reclaim 19 bighas of land that eight families had allegedly occupied for several decades.
Residents allegedly threw stones at the police officials, injuring one constable. In response, security forces used lathicharged the crowd. A video shared on social media showed the confrontation, with men attempting to block a bulldozer and women clinging to their houses to prevent demolition.
Municipal officials said the eviction followed proper procedures. HMB Chairperson Chaturthi Rani Biswas explained that the land was allocated to the Board in 1963 for development. “We issued notices to the families after the land was officially demarcated on August 7. On humanitarian grounds, we allowed additional time beyond the 48-hour deadline. Since the families did not vacate, the eviction was carried out today,” she stated.
Executive Officer Ashim Jyoti Kalita mentioned that the eviction was first scheduled for 18 and 19 August, but was postponed in hopes the families would leave voluntarily. When they didn't, the drive proceeded.
While Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika said that even the Hon’ble Gauhati High Court has ruled that encroachment on government land is illegal, lawyer Abdul Ahad, representing the affected families, said the affected families have been living there for over 40 years. The latter accused the Municipal Board of misusing police force to displace them.
