Summary

The Tamil Nadu government has alienated around 2762 acres of land near Shoolagiri in Krishnagiri district for the construction of an Industrial park by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamilnadu Ltd (SIPCOT). The state government had announced that the third and fourth manufacturing zones by SIPCOT would be established near Shoolagiri in Hosur Taluk, Krishnagiri district. Out of the 2762 acres, only 572 acres of land belonged to the government while the rest of the land had to be acquired. This included 2190 acres of cultivable lands from several villages including Atakurikki, Kothapalli and Thoripalli. However, residents here have opposed the project as it would mean giving up their agricultural lands, which they are completely dependent on for their livelihoods. They have also added that most of their agricultural lands were demarcated as fallow lands and notified for acquisition. According to Dilli Babu, Harur MLA, the land was earlier acquired for two similar industrial estates under SIPCOT, and over 236 units seemed nonfunctional. The residents have also argued that the land includes a watershed area, as it is situated around the Kelavarapalli dam and irrigated by the Thenpennai river. P.Shanmugam, who serves as the State general secretary of Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, has stated that almost 90 per cent of the farmers here are small and marginal farmers. When Land Conflict Watch tried to contact activists in August 2020 to get updates on the status of the conflict, they stated that the project was already up and running, and protests seem to have died down.
