Summary

The Agartala Municipal Corporation undertook an eviction drive on May 19, 2023, demolishing numerous structures constructed on government-owned land.

This eviction drive was carried out with the purpose of reducing congestion in the GB-Indranagar area, which is one of the busiest parts of the city. Additionally, it aimed to safeguard the city from flooding by creating adequate space for a proper drainage system. Consequently, this eviction resulted in the demolition of various houses and shops that had been erected along the road connecting GB Hospital to the Dhaleshwar bypass.

Several individuals who were impacted by the eviction process have made allegations that neither the AMC nor any government agencies provided them with prior notice. They further asserted that they were not granted sufficient time to vacate their residences and shops, resulting in significant losses and avoidable damages to them.

However Mayor Dipak Majumdar has denied these allegations and stated “This is totally false. Notice was served 7 days ago, public announcement was done too. Commissioner, corporator even myself had gone and repeatedly conveyed about this (eviction). Due to encroachment of roads, work have been hampered. We decided that traffic must be decongested in the larger GB area and accordingly the process has begun”.

The AMC Mayor on the other hand has emphasized upon the significance of implementing a well-functioning drainage system within the city and highlighted the escalating concern of waterlogging, which has emerged as a problematic issue.

The Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation reiterated that the residents who encroached on the government land have been provided a 7-day period to evacuate the premises. He said “We will decongest the city at any cost. We will not listen to anything else or pay heed to any barrier. Our work has begun already.”
