In October 2025, the Maldhari community in Gujarat's Khodu village in Wadhwan taluka alleged large-scale illegal mining on 200 acres of 'Gauchar' (or grazing) land. The community, which depends on cattle-rearing, demanded an immediate halt to the mining activity and the release of the grazing land from encroachment citing threat to their livelihood.
Representatives of the community on 8 October 2025 submitted a written representation to the District Collector alleging that the mineral mafia has been destroying the land by digging on a large scale in survey no. 1258 and other grazing lands in the outskirts of Khodu village.
Villagers alleged that powerful blasts are being used to extract white stone illegally, creating fear among residents and posing a danger to students and pedestrians travelling on the roads leading to Rupavati and Velavadar. They also pointed out the risk posed by these explosions near a 66 kV sub-station, where high-tension lines run barely ten feet away from the mining site.
They claimed that the illegal operations have been flourishing with the connivance of officials in the Mines and Minerals Department, who allegedly facilitate the issuance of illegal licences. Villagers added that they have consistently opposed excavation or earthwork on public land, but those who raise objections are allegedly being intimidated, assaulted, or threatened with false cases under the Atrocity Act. They further alleged attempts to create caste-based tensions through social media to divide the community and weaken the protest.
According to the villagers, nearly 200 acres of Gauchar land has been under pressure for two decades. Of this, stone mining reportedly takes place on around 50 acres, while another 50 acres has been encroached upon by an individual who has planted trees and fenced off the area. In all, villagers say that 10 survey numbers of 'Gauchar' and government waste land are affected. Despite raising the issue before the Chief Minister in 2008 and the District Collector in 2012, they claim no substantial action has been taken.
With tensions rising, villagers have warned that if mining is not stopped within 30 days, they will march to the Collector’s office with their livestock and stage a sit-in. They have demanded a neutral and time-bound inquiry and specifically requested that the Prant Officer of Chotila be assigned charge for two months to oversee the process. Farmers are also demanding that all survey numbers officially measured and boundary stakes installed to prevent further land grab.
The villagers said that if authorities continue to ignore their complaints, they will launch a Gandhian-style agitation, marking another chapter in the growing land-rights and resource-access conflicts unfolding across rural Gujarat.
