Summary

Over 500 farmers from Sarjapur Hobli in Anekal Taluk carried out a bike rally to Freedom Park in Bengaluru on 18 July 2025 in opposition to the Karnataka government’s SWIFT City project — a planned 1,000-acre hub in Sarjapur, Bengaluru, aimed to boost startups in AI, fintech, and data analytics. The project was unveiled in December 2024 and handed over to the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB). It is expected to offer state-of-the-art offices, residential spaces, and co-working environments to support small and medium-sized startups, offering them spaces between 500 and 20,000 square feet.

“Despite the presence of thousands of companies in Bengaluru, many stakeholders have expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of well-planned workspaces. To address this, we will provide 150-metre-wide connecting roads in Sarjapura and ensure world-class facilities, including residential clusters and schools,” Large and Medium Industries Minister MB Patil said in 2024 at the time of the project’s launch. However, the ambitious project is expected to affect over 1,000 farmer households, whose agricultural land is on the line, according to farmers associations.

“For many farmers, agriculture is their bread and butter. They don’t have any other occupation. So this project will take away their major source of livelihood,” said Manjunath KN, farmer and Secretary of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, Anekal Unit (the group participated in the recent protest). “Farmers weren’t consulted before the project was proposed. We don’t have enough fertile land in this area, so we do not have the option to farm on another land,” Manjunath told LCW.

He lamented about how thousands of acres of fertile land in Anekal has already been taken over by industrial spaces, high-rise buildings and residential layouts, over the past few decades. A prime example is the Surya City Phase 4 project being developed by Karnataka Housing Board (KHB). Advertised as Asia’s biggest first-of-its-kind residential township, the project offers 36,000 premium plots across 2,400 acres near Jigani in Anekal taluk. In 2022, around 100 farmers who were going to lose their land fought their case at the Janatha Bhoomi Adalat. “However, they built the entire layout on top of fertile land,” Manjunath said.

The farmer also claimed that the sprouting of industrial and residential layouts over the decades has polluted nearby lakes. In October 2024, residents of Anekal woke up to see Chandapura lake frothing and foaming. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had earlier slapped Rs 500 crore fine on the state government for failing to maintain Chandapura lake. In fact, the quality of water in 35 lakes in Anekal was found to be unfit for agriculture, according to an analysis by officials from Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) in June 2025.  “When our condition is already so bad, why are more of our fertile lands being taken away?” asked Manjunath.

Currently, the project is still in its acquisition phase, according to KIADB officials. Farmers are urging the government to change the location for the project and consult them first before going ahead. If their demands are not met, they plan to intensify their protest in the coming days. “We are going to nearby villages every week and protesting there so that people know what kind of impact this project will have on us,” said Manjunath.

In August 2025, hundreds of farmers laid siege to the Anekal taluk office, in protest against final notifications issued by the KIADB for the project. They raised slogans like "our land, our right" while marching to the office.
