Summary

Residents of Banderdewa in Arunachal Pradesh protested against eviction notices sent by the Assam district administration to clear land for the construction of a National Highway in the area.

Locals contended that the land lies within a disputed boundary region falling under the jurisdiction of the Papumpare district in Arunachal Pradesh.

On November 18, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Lakhimpur issued an eviction notice to residents in the area, scheduling the eviction drive for November 20. In response, residents called for a suspension of the eviction drive until a resolution was reached and requested a joint notice from both the District Administrations of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, allowing residents sufficient time to comply.

Residents asserted that the Assam government issued an eviction notice, targeting structures located within a 22-meter distance from the Right of Way (ROW), contrary to the stipulated 15 meters. Additionally, they emphasised that the contested land falls within the reserved forest area of Arunachal Pradesh. Consequently, residents called for collaborative and constructive measures from both the District Administrations of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to address the situation.

Residents asserted their long-standing residence in the Banderdewa area for numerous years, highlighting a history of maintaining a status quo and fostering positive relationships with their Assam neighbours.

They issued a cautionary message to the Assam authorities, urging them to respect their demands. Additionally, they held the district administration of Arunachal Pradesh accountable for not taking prompt action against the incident.
