On 6 July 2026, protesters from Basalguri, Shilgara and Malgaon demonstrated against a proposed thermal power project involving the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) and the Adani Group, which they said could displace indigenous Koch Rajbongshi families living in the area.
The demonstration was jointly organised by the Kokrajhar East and Dhubri East district units of the All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU). A large number of villagers, including women and elderly residents, marched through Basalguri carrying banners and raising slogans such as “Our home and our land” and “We will die but not give our land.”
According to the protesters, around 335 bighas (approximately 110 acres) of land in areas including Greater Malgaon, Shilgara and Basalguri were allocated to APDCL in 2005. They said survey work resumed in 2006 and warned that the proposed power project could lead to displacement of locals.
AKRSU leaders Bitul Kumar Barman and Phanin Dutta Bakra criticised the Assam government and the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), accusing them of failing to address the community’s concerns. Barman alleged that evicting indigenous families from their ancestral homes amounted to an attack on Assam’s indigenous communities.
The protesters said they were not opposed to development but objected to the displacement of families from their homes. Barman suggested that, if land acquisition was necessary, the government could instead survey and use government-owned khas land located about 300 metres away. He said the organisation would not object to such an alternative but would oppose the eviction of indigenous Koch Rajbongshi families from their ancestral land. The women from the area urged the government not to evict them while indicating that the land is more crucial than any other welfare benefits like the Orunudoi scheme or subsidised ration.
The protesters also demanded that elected representatives from the Baokhungri BTC and Assembly constituencies visit the affected villages and discuss the issue with residents.
The administration deployed a large police contingent, led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police and the officer-in-charge of Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station. Following the rally, Kokrajhar Revenue Circle Officer and Executive Magistrate Daradi Debroy met the protesters and assured them that their complaints would be forwarded to the BTC administration, the Assam government and the elected representatives.
