Summary

On 30 October 2025, residents of Siddharth Nagar, Andheri, were left stranded on the streets after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) razed over 41 unauthorised shanties for the construction of a new bridge connecting Yari Road and Lokhandwala.

The bridge was first proposed in 2002 and gained momentum when a tender was issued in 2014 with an estimated cost of Rs 16 crore, and a contractor was appointed. However, the project failed to take off due to legal challenges. In 2023, the project revived after the civic body floated another tender for Rs 42 crore.

The project has faced environmental concerns due to its planned route through a mangrove forest and creek. The project required felling 48 mangrove trees over 0.21 hectares of creek land and clearance of 41 huts on the land designated for the bridge.

In 2019, local residents had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court expressing concern over the destruction of mangroves. However, the BMC assured that trees would be replanted. The High Court upheld the utility of reducing the travel time between two locations over the environmental loss of mangrove land. The order was challenged in Supreme court which also upheld the Bombay High Court's order.

In 2024, the BMC received the required environmental clearance and cleared about 48 mangroves to facilitate the construction of the bridge.

In March 2025, the Deputy Collector's office served eviction notice to residents. The residents responded to the notice demanding that they be considered for rehabilitation under the Maharashtra Slum Act. A legal notice was also served by the residents demanding the same. However, on 26 October 2025, they were asked to vacate the premise or face eviction. On 30 October 2026, the slum was evicted without any rehabilitation.
