Around 50 families in Pancharatna village in Assam's Goalpara district were evicted during an anti-encroachment drive led by the district administration and Forest Department.
Officials alleged that these families illegally occupied forest land, constructing houses and other structures without proper authorisation. The eviction had affected numerous individuals, including a 60-year-old grandmother whose residence was demolished in the process.
Forest Department officials asserted that residents were instructed to vacate the area due to its susceptibility to human-elephant conflicts. Tejas Mariswamy Divisional Forest Officer of Goalpara district stated, “The administration and Forest Department have been continuously conducting eviction drives against the illegal encroachment in the district.”
He added, “We have a plan for many eviction drives in Goalpara district. This is one of the eviction plans. The human-elephant conflicts in the district have risen due to illegal encroachment. Today we have evicted around 50 families from the Pancharatna Reserve Forest Area.”
On January 13, Boyat Ali was found dead in his loosely erected tarpaulin shanty. “He died from the cold. It was a murder, a state-led murder. If not for the eviction, he would still be alive today,” Motibor Rahman, Ali’s kin, told Maktoob Media.
Despite receiving eviction notices, the residents did not comply and continued to occupy the space along State Highway 46 at Pancharatna. Some members of the affected families reportedly sought recourse by filing an appeal with the Gauhati High Court, seeking a stay order on the impending eviction.
The affected individuals claimed that their families had inhabited the area for multiple generations and they also questioned the motives of the Forest Department. Further they stated that they were given notice a week before the eviction, which made it difficult for them to make other arrangements.
