Summary

The Statue of Unity, boasting the world's tallest statue, attracted around 5 million visitors in 2023. Recognizing the need for improved accessibility, the government has proposed the construction of a new airport nearby.

On February 6, 2024, the Gujarat government informed to the state Assembly, through a written response, its plans for a new airport in Ekta Nagar aimed at enhancing connectivity to the Statue of Unity. In response to a query raised by Shailesh Mehta, BJP MLA from Dabhoi, the government disclosed that land in three villages – Kherkuva, Bhadarva, and Sureva – in Tilakwada taluka, Narmada district, has been earmarked for the airport project.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the government's response, shared by Mehta, indicated, "Out of the land earmarked for the airport, approximately 210 square metres are privately owned, with permission granted by the state government on November 20, 2023, to proceed with land acquisition."

The statement emphasised the necessity of developing a modern airport in the area due to the significant influx of domestic and international tourists visiting the Statue of Unity. Additionally, it mentioned that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is currently preparing a pre-feasibility report, following which land acquisition activities will commence.

Even as Mehta said that only 210 square metres are privately owned, the project proposal or plan has not been made public yet to gauge the actual land area that will be acquired for the project. However, villagers have already started opposing the project.

It is important to note that Narmada is a Schedule V district where PESA Act is applicable, making it mandatory to consult with Gram Sabhas before undertaking any land acquisition or development project.

On 21 February 2024, farmers from four villages - Ferkua, Bhadarva, Ruppura, and Surva in the Tilakwada Taluka of Narmada District - submitted a letter to the District Collector collectively opposing the project. "If our land is acquired, we will become landless, making it extremely difficult for us to sustain our livelihoods as we do not possess other skills," the letter read.

Earlier, on February 15, 2024, the four villages under the Bhadarva Panchayat had passed a resolution to oppose giving up our ancestral land.
