The Central government's recent draft notification declaring 56,825.7 square kilometers of the Western Ghats as an Ecologically Sensitive Area (ESA) has sparked widespread protests in several states, including Gujarat.
In South Gujarat, 40 villages in Dangs, along with five in Navsari and 19 in Tapi district, have been marked as part of this zone, covering a total of 449 square kilometers. The notification, issued by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has triggered concerns among the local tribal communities about the impact on their livelihoods.
In October 2024, Vansda Congress MLA Anant Patel launched an awareness campaign to mobilize opposition to the move in Dangs district, highlighting the potential harm to the tribal population. The local Congress unit, led by Patel, aims to bring attention to the concerns of the tribal communities, whose forest-based livelihoods may be at risk due to restrictions on activities like bamboo harvesting.
Former BJP leader and tribal leader Mangal Gavit, who previously served as a Congress MLA, also voiced his displeasure. Gavit criticized the move, expressing fears that designating 80% of Dangs' forest area as part of the eco-sensitive zone could disrupt religious and social events tied to tribal customs. He emphasized that the perceived benefits of the eco-sensitive zone are outweighed by the risks posed to the local tribal communities.
Gavit further alleged that over 20 villages have passed a resolution at their gram panchayat meeting that their villages should not be included in the ESA.
Meanwhile, Dangs North Deputy Conservator of Forest D N Rabari told The Indian Express that the department carried out an awareness drive in all the 40 villages falling in ESA. "We have also told the villagers that if they have any objections they should give us in writing. At the meeting, tribal leader Mangal Gavit had objected and raised his concerns with us. We are also looking into it. We have given time for people to submit their objections.”
