Summary

As part of its ongoing efforts to clear unauthorized encroachments, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) conducted an eviction drive between Kamakhya and Guwahati railway stations in June 2025, during which 29 illegal structures were demolished in a three-hour exercise.

The eviction drive was carried out with the coordinated effort of 10 Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, seven members of the Government Railway Police (GRP), six officers from the Panbazar and Fancy Bazar police stations, and 20 employees from the SSE/P.Way department.

Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, chief public relations officer for the NFR said, "The NFR has been implementing a comprehensive approach to tackle encroachment issues, which includes awareness campaigns, regular surveillance patrols, and strict enforcement actions.” He also added that the eviction drive is part of the NFR's broad strategy to reclaim railway land and maintain the safety and cleanliness of railway infrastructure across its jurisdiction.

Nilanjan Deb, NFR’s public relation officer said, “Eviction of encroachers from railway land is a continuous process we conduct. In the past five months, we have conducted eviction drives at Lumding railway junction, north Lakhimpur railway station and a few other locations.” Deb added that they came across repeated offenders who encroach on the railway’s land within a few months after the eviction, and because of that they are forced to conduct eviction drives after every 6 to 8 months.

A senior official from NFR stated that collected garbage is often dumped in the encroached areas, which are also occupied by several unlicensed vendors. Although NFR has conducted similar eviction drives in the past, illegal encroachers continue to return to these sites.
