On 10 October 2017, hundreds of farmers protested against the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) for failing to fulfil its commitment after it acquired land in villages nine years ago near Dhahej in Bhruch. They blocked the Bharuch-Dahej road, disrupting road traffic for several hours. The farmers demanded employment for those who lost their land when the GIDC was set up by the government as well as for the local people
Discussion was initiated, and the farmers were sent back, but no action has been taken since. The protest lasted only for a day and normal traffic resumed on the Bharuch-Dahej after over five hours.
The land acquisition itself was strongly opposed and resisted for a while before the farmers had to let their lands go. However, today, apart from the demand to be compensated, the farmers are also open to getting their land back from the GIDC. This particularly came about when, in September 2016, the Supreme Court set a precedent by ordering the handover of government-acquired Tata Nano land back to the owners owing to government-corporate conspiracies that involved the former acquiring land for the benefit of the latter.
Meanwhile, the GIDC has allotted its land to industrial estates. As of April 2021, it imposed a 15% increase in allotment prices, surprising and earning criticisms from industry associations. The move is likely to hamper economic growth and investments, which are the primary objectives of the project, while keeping the displaced farmers uncompensated.
In April 2022, residents of Suva village in Vagra taluka of Gujarat's Bharuch district took to the streets, blocking the road connecting the Dahej GIDC industrial area. Frustrated over unfulfilled promises of employment and grazing land, the villagers staged the protest to draw attention to their long-standing demands. The demonstrators accused authorities and companies of failing to deliver on assurances given when their land was acquired for industrial development. The protest disrupted traffic and prompted government officials to rush to the site for discussions.
In June 2024, the Gujarat Congress alleged corruption in land allocation to industries in two GIDC estates in Bharuch, a claim the state government dismissed as baseless.
GIDC had in June 2023 declared Saykha and Dahej estates as “saturated” zones, requiring land allocation through public auction. However, in February this year, the decision was reversed, Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil told reporters. Gohil pointed out that GIDC reclassified the estates as “unsaturated,” allowing plots to be allotted at a fixed 'jantri' rate without public auction. He alleged this change enabled a scam worth Rs 2,000 crore and demanded an explanation and a judicial investigation.
Minister Rushikesh Patel countered, saying the decision was taken by the GIDC board after industry bodies highlighted adequate unsold land in the estates. Patel insisted the process was transparent and no irregularities occurred.
Large tracts of village land were acquired to develop the Dahej industrial estate, with the promise of compensatory employment opportunities for displaced residents. However, years have passed with little progress. In January 2025, protesters alleged that five companies had failed to fulfil job commitments, leaving locals jobless despite the promises made. Residents claim that GIDC acquired their land at low prices, assuring them that industries would bring jobs and prosperity to their families. The protest at the company’s gates included demands for the company to honour its promises, as discussions with management remain inconclusive.
Meanwhile, a promised allocation of 200 acres for grazing was reportedly reduced to 45 acres, but even that has not been granted. With over 500 animals in the village, the lack of grazing land has intensified the community's struggles.
